"I'm 'bout to drop a motherfuckin' classic," A$AP Rocky declares on "SWAT TEAM," the first of a handful of bonus tracks tacked onto the end of Don't Be Dumb. A classic? That sounds great! I can't wait to hear it. Because surely he can't be referring to Don't Be Dumb, an overstuffed and engrossing album that's a bit of a mess — a grab bag of ideas that defies the idea of being a fully-realized classic, instead acting as a reflection of a rapper who has a very eventful eight years since his last album, 2018's TESTING.He spent a month in a Swedish prison on an assault conviction, was acquitted in a shooting trial, had three kids with Rihanna, acted in two films in 2025 (If I Had Legs I'd Kick You and Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest), and has been teasing since Don't Be Dumb since 2022. Or, as Rocky puts it with the first two lines of the album: "It's been a li'l while since I been in the league / A couple li'l trials, couple of leaks." It's hardly any wonder, then, that Don't Be Dumb crams eight years' worth of ups and downs and sonic whims into roughly an hour of moody maximalism. "PUNK ROCKY" initially seemed a curious choice of a lead single, a dreamy throwback to the reverb-soaked haze of circa-2010 blog rock; here, it makes a little more sense alongside the chill strut of the braggadocious "PLAYA" and the wobbly DeMarcore breakdowns of the aptly named "AIR FORCE (BLACK DEMARCO)."The latter song also ping-pongs between computerized anxiety attacks — a fractured, disjointed approach that elsewhere veers into goofy lounge-jazz with Doechii on the confusing but compelling "ROBBERY," electropunk aggression on "STFU," and even morbid freak folk courtesy of Jessica Pratt on "THE END."It feels more like a Pinterest board or a sonic journal than a proper, cohesive album. And, just like a real journal, it contains some petty grievances that probably didn't need to be aired in public — in this case, the tame Drake diss track "STOLE YA FLOW," with forgettable jabs about BBLs failing to register compared to Drizzy's more famous feuds. Since Don't Be Dumb dropped less than a week ago, Rocky has already added a couple tracks onto it, and he's been teasing that he will continue to expand the album's "Disc 2" on streaming services. I kind of doubt that these odds and ends will amount to the classic that Rocky has promised, but they're welcome new entries in the log.
