Facing the past dead-on intensifies the present, and amid the red cups you’re left wondering about love, death, and what you have become. Brooklyn resident Mitski Miyawaki, who records simply as Mitski, captures the feeling of this narrative on “Townie,” off her upcoming record, Bury Me at Makeout Creek. Over thick, surfy noise-pop riffs, she describes the lead-up to a party that does not sound especially fun, and the dark humor of the record’s title is strung through her twisted inner-monologue there: “I want a love that falls as fast as a body from the balcony/And I want a kiss like my heart is hitting the ground,” she sings, riding a wave of distortion, “I’m holding my breath with a baseball bat.” But amid the extremities of Mitski’s yearning, she hits all the high notes; you believe her when she says she’ll change.
