Like a dying city block, JPEGMAFIA’s music feels simultaneously claustrophobic and barren, bustling and lonely. The Los Angeles rapper’s latest SoundCloud drop, “Millennium,” is just a quick freestyle—a few lines thrown in shadow-boxer flurries, a few memorable taunts (“No you cannot have my masters/Cuz I made this beat from scratch, bitch”). But framing it is the chorus to Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way,” which he sings himself with disarming sincerity. His voice has a hint of velvet breathiness that distantly recalls singing style of the Boys themselves. Against the meat-locker chill of his production—full of buzzes, creaks, and muffled detonations—the warmest and most expansive boy-band chorus in history suddenly sounds like a hardened fragment from a lost civilization, something we marvel at but could never recreate.
