Musicboard alternatives: where to go in 2026

Musicboard has been down for days at a time since early 2026, the Android app is gone from Google Play, the iPhone app hasn’t been updated since May 2025, and there has never been an export. Here is where people are going, including the app I make, with what each one gives up.

By Ben, the creator of Rate.fm. I’ve tried to keep this fair.

First, get your ratings out

Whatever you pick, do this today. rate.fm/musicboard downloads every rating, review and list from your public Musicboard profile as a CSV. No account, nothing to install, the file is yours. It takes about ten seconds.

TL;DR

  • Like-for-like on iPhone: Rate.fm. Same five things, plus critic scores and a streaming connection, and it imports your Musicboard CSV in one tap.
  • On Android: Record Club or Echo.
  • Web first: Peak Music Reviews, or Rate.fm on the web.
  • Same half-star scale: Rate Your Music, if you can live without an app.

Each one, honestly

What Musicboard got right

For a few years it was the real Letterboxd for music: a good-looking iPhone app, half-star ratings, reviews, lists, a listen-later queue, friends, and the biggest community of any app in this space, 5,300 App Store ratings at 4.7. Most of the apps below are copies of it in one way or another. The problems were never the product; they were uptime, the missing Android app since 2026, the missing export, and the silence.

Rate.fm

The one I make, and the only one that imports your Musicboard data directly. A native iPhone app plus a website. Ratings out of 10, reviews, lists and tier lists, friends and a feed. Two things Musicboard never had: it connects to Apple Music and Spotify so you can rate what is playing from the Lock Screen, and album pages show 80,000 critic reviews from 18 publications next to the community score. Every profile has a listening stats page. Free, no ads; a badge subscription is optional. Falls short on: no Android app yet, and a smaller community than Musicboard had at its peak.

Record Club

Free on iPhone, Android and the web, on the MusicBrainz catalog, with barcode scanning for physical records. The best bet for Android refugees. No streaming connection, no critic scores, and the feed is quiet.

Echo

Free on iPhone and Android. Ranks albums against each other instead of scoring them, with charts among friends. 4.9 on the App Store, active developer, no website.

Peak Music Reviews

Web and iPhone, free. Built explicitly as the Musicboard replacement: ratings out of 10.0, reviews, lists, profiles, release-night chat rooms. Android promised. New, so the community is small.

Kora

A clean, free iPhone app from a solo developer with ratings, reviews, lists, release alerts, and connections to Apple Music, Spotify, Last.fm, Tidal and Deezer. iPhone only and small.

Musis

Rate what is playing on Spotify out of 10, with reviews, friends and stats. iPhone and Android, $3.99 a year for Pro. Spotify only, and the last update was December 2025.

Ratings

A brand-new free iPhone app: songs, albums and artists out of 10, reviews, mixtapes, discussion. Updated weekly. Too new to judge the community.

Rate Your Music and Album of the Year

The two big websites. Neither has an app. RYM has the same half-star scale as Musicboard and the deepest catalog on earth; AOTY has critic scores and the comment culture. Both are free with ads. Good if you are done with apps.

Questions people ask

Is Musicboard shutting down?

Nobody outside the company knows. What is public: long outages since early 2026, the Android app removed from Google Play, and no iPhone update since May 2025. The subreddit is mostly people asking where to go. Whether or not it closes, your ratings are only safe once you have a copy.

How do I export my Musicboard ratings?

Musicboard never shipped an export. rate.fm/musicboard reads your public profile and downloads every rating, review and list as a CSV. No account, nothing to install, and the file is yours to take anywhere. It can also import everything into Rate.fm in one tap.

What is the best Musicboard alternative?

Rate.fm is the closest like-for-like on iPhone: ratings, reviews, lists, friends, plus critic scores and an Apple Music or Spotify connection Musicboard never had, and it imports your Musicboard data directly. On Android, Record Club or Echo. Peak Music Reviews is the newest web-and-iPhone option pitching itself as the replacement.

Which alternatives are free?

Rate.fm, Record Club, Echo, Peak, Kora and Ratings are free to use. Musis sells a $3.99 a year tier. Rate Your Music and Album of the Year are free with ads. Musicboard Pro was $4.99 a month.

Which alternative has half-star ratings like Musicboard?

Rate Your Music uses the same half-star scale. Most of the apps use 0 to 10, and Rate.fm’s import converts the half-star scale to it.
