Based in Atlanta, Georgia, Elise Tippins and Matt Weiner have been making galactic synth pop as Featureless Ghost since 2010, touching on darkwave, minimal synth, and trance. After a string of streamable EP releases, they've now got a debut record, Personality Matrix, out this month via Iowa City's Night People label. Its hybrid analog/digital production brings depth to snapping beats and the great vocal interplay between Tippins' dramatic, oft-oscillating delivery and Weiner's colder contributions-- as on the anxious and very catchy "Flash", a Matrix standout. What makes "Flash" hit hardest is its clarity; unlike the recent legions of similar-reaching artists, when Tippins sings "an open heart is not open or free," she sounds like she wants its complications to be heard.
