Though “Chain Smoker” is one of the last tracks on Chance the Rapper’s excellent new mixtape, Acid Rap, it’s the best introduction to the colorful package that Chance’s music and kaleidoscopic flow provide throughout the tape. Over spaced-out production by Nate Fox, Chance does all the comparisons (André 3000, Kanye, is that you, Wyclef?) justice while totally making Acid Rap its own planet, complete with its own hazy-yet-mappable atmosphere. Here, Chance makes it perfectly clear just how much control he has over his cast-it-out, reel-it-in flow, lyrically blowing bubbles before popping them in the same breath. Out pour his thoughts: paranoid, drug-dripped, referential, skeptical, braggadocius, earnest. That’s Chance.
