Japanese experimental pop musician Shugo Tokumaru is known for his bursts of kindergarten giddiness and playful disposition, but his first album in five years, Toss, tries to let others dictate his movements. On new single “Lita-Ruta,” he splices improvised contributions from Maywa Denki and Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier, finding reverie even in things he didn’t record. Like he’s emerging from a preschool playroom covered in paint, Tokumaru begins the song with an overworked music box—the first of many elementary instruments. He chops Saunier’s drumming, giving the song a wild undercurrent that whips through the intersecting melodies, and then whisks it off into a sea of fuzz pedals, fingerpicked guitar, and flashy horns. Normally Tokumaru records songs solo, but when collaborators appear in “Lita-Ruta,” he uses them as unexpected challenges, pushing his pop to mature, without losing that wide-eyed innocence
