There's often something appealing about songs whose predominant sonic characteristics are described by their very titles. Welsh quintet Joanna Gruesome's "Sugarcrush" is no different, a wickedly paced slice of noise pop whose sweet guitar and vocal melodies are being crushed on either end by bleeding-edge, dissonant riffage and a rhythm section determined to bash the listener into submission. Cut from their forthcoming debut Weird Sister (out September 10 in the U.S. via Slumberland and a day before in Europe via Fortuna POP!), "Sugarcrush" is a study in toeing the line between sticky replayability and cleansing, cathartic aggression that belies the band's sickeningly twee moniker.
