It can’t be a coincidence that Music for the Age of Miracles—the Clientele’s first album in seven years—is due out on September 22, the first day of autumn. The Clientele have always evoked time and place like few working bands: When you listen to their songs, you imagine yourself on a lonely drive, or an early morning walk, or—as vocalist Alasdair MacLean sings in “Lunar Days”—“when it’s late in November and you’re lost in the leaves.” Weightless and hushed, “Lunar Days” finds the Clientele in decidedly sharper focus than anything on their previous two releases, 2010’s mini-album Minotaur and 2009’s sepia-toned Bonfires on the Heath. It’s sprightly and gently psychedelic, recalling the pattering rhythm of the band’s early singles “This is the year that the monster will come,” MacLean sings as the chorus fades out. It feels like a message from the not-so-distant future, channeled through a song that aims to transport you there.
