London producer Not Waving and Marie Davidson link up for some club-ready industrial music

From her work as half of Montreal coldwave duo Essaie Pas to her solo work, one of Marie Davidson’s greatest strengths as an artist is her ability to cut through the bullshit. Her often tongue-in-cheek lyrics find humor in everyday situations, which she delivers in a detached monotone over frigid analog beats. London-based producer Alessio Natalizia, who makes dark, fractured EBM as Not Waving, is the perfect foil for the Canadian musician.

Their new single “Where Are We,” sees the collaborators embrace their pop sensibilities while maintaining a sinister air. “It’s a sick world we live in, a very sick world,” deadpans Davidson, painting a dystopian narrative of failing technology and political unrest. Her stream of consciousness lyrics are pierced by Natalizia’s motorik beat, full of seesawing acid basslines and unrelenting percussion that builds to a frenzied tempo. At the track’s peak, Davidson offers a mock airplane boarding call, but it almost sounds as though she’s sneering as she delivers the line: “Have a nice trip and good luck.” While it’s only a one-off, together they make a formidable pair.
