It’s been only a few months since the release of Kelela’s excellent mixtape Cut 4 Me, but since then the agile L.A.-based singer's put out tracks that place her in a vibey haze compared to the slick and lustrous coils of what came before. “Melba’s Call”, a new single from Night Slugs co-founder Bok Bok, finds Kelela matched with a beat worthy of her athletic, weightless voice. Bok Bok’s production is an electro-funk-inspired shuffle that caresses as it sucker-punches, and like much of the Night Slugs canon, “Melba’s Call” succeeds through its crisp rendering of subtly mangled instrumentation in an idiom that’s simultaneously nostalgic and forward thinking.
