As Frankie Cosmos, Greta Kline boils down complicated emotional states into simple, direct guitar pop, tackling existential and romantic turmoil often with just a single chorus and verse. However, her new trio, Lexie—with Alex Bailey and Doug Bleichner from Atlanta punk band Warehouse—opts for more gnarled arrangements. Consequently, their songs feel more unsettled and surreal. “Blood Boils,” the best track on their debut album, Record Time!, packs the spiralling anger and regret of a breakup into an agitated two minutes.

Here, Kline shirks straightforward narratives, listing fragmented images that seem pulled from the end of a relationship: Someone’s crying on the phone, there’s a funeral, blood is boiling. As guitar arpeggios meander, building menacingly, it all comes across as a heap of noise, like someone reeling in the wake of disaster. She ends with a broken plea: “No one can touch me/ Get away from me/ I want my mommy.” It’s an anxious sentiment to finish a song with, proving just how dark Lexie allows Kline to get.
