It’s been four years since Cassie’s slept-on RockaByeBaby mixtape, the sort of lull familiar to anyone who’s been a fan of the cult R&B singer since, well, ever. In August, she quietly returned with a single unfortunately accompanied by the words “featuring G-Eazy.” But she’s also recently been in the studio with Khalid, Jeremih, and Kaytranada. The latter producer worked on four songs with Cassie, the first of which, “Don’t Play It Safe,” is her best track in nearly half a decade and arguably her proper comeback.

The past couple of years have been good to Cassie’s voice; on “Don’t Play It Safe” it’s lower, fuller and set amid plush backing vocals. Kaytranada contributes the sort of minimalist track she’s used to, just smokier: a brooding, bassy production, synth pads and organ hanging like a haze over late nights. Amidst this, Cassie suggests to a prospective lover that they might want to cut through the ambiguity, take the reins and make a move, while not-so-secretly luxuriating in the tension. It’s a mood that runs through Cassie’s work all the way back to her debut single “Me & U,” and it’s one that’s been deeply missed.
