Out of Tempe, Ariz., the desert punk five-piece Destruction Unit used their recent Void LP to establish a few signature moves-- skull-crushing repetition, menacing walls of nuanced guitar noise, feedback magick wah'd from hell to the sky, a sprawling kraut backbone, evil melodies. Those are all in place on their new single, recorded during sessions for an upcoming full-length out August 20 on Sacred Bones. If this 7" is any indication, the new material is more sharply produced with a heavier punk attack. Whether frontman Ryan Rousseau's vocals are hovering uneasy over a wall of antagonizing noise or struggling strangled underneath, A-side "Sonic Pearl" is a wonderfully deluded way of letting us know that Destruction Unit are alive.
