Years ago, there were Booker T. & the M.G.'s at Stax Records, the Funk Brothers at Motown Records, and MFSB all over Philadelphia. There aren't many house bands left carving out their own sound today, save for the guys at the Richmond, VA label Spacebomb. The same four players that played on Matthew E. White's stellar debut Big Inner are now underneath Ivan Howard, the same singer who recently covered Sade's Love Deluxe with his band the Rosebuds and fronts velvet-rock supergroup Gayngs. Continuing in the that vein and now recording as—ahem—Howard Ivans, he and the Spacebomb band mixes up slick, upper-midwest funk under the R&B shuffle of "Red Faced Boy", which sees release as a 7" on November 19. There's a guitar line ripped right out of Quincy Jones' playbook from the 1980s, sharp horn stabs dancing around disco violins from the '70s, and Howard, pining after someone with a pale croon.
