Bronx rapper Quay Dash repeatedly shuns contemporary rap, instead positioning a protégé of old school divas like Remy Ma, Lil’ Kim, and Foxy Brown. “Bossed Up,” a SOPHIE-produced track on Dash’s Transphobic EP, draws from her experiences as a black trans woman—though she is also careful to avoid being reduced to any one of her identities. Dash has said, “I’m not putting myself in a box either, but I know that I’m here to represent for people in my community, definitely.”

There are undoubtedly elements of Remy’s hard-hitting flow and infectious confidence in “Bossed Up.” “Bossed up/ Look at me I’m flossed up,” Dash spits, velvet, over a trap drum kit and undulating horns. Throughout the song, she pivots boasts on her her own beauty, success, and tenacity against snappy comebacks to her less driven haters. “What’s a goon to a queen?” she taunts, her voice gliding over a jagged sonic landscape. Clearly, Quay Dash has no time for downers or bores on her rise to the top.
