Over the last few years, the British emcee Simbi Ajikawo has carved out a bountiful mixtape run. Ajikawo, who records under the name Little Simz, has the dexterity of a hardcore lyricist and the ear of a pop writer, an intersection that’s commanded her a brightening spotlight. On “Customz,” an unmastered loosie Simz recorded with Def Jam artist and songwriter Bibi Bourelly, she’s enjoying her tour life victory lap.

“Customz” is a sultry traveller’s anthem. Even in it’s muddy unmastered form, producer Astronote’s backdrop is a simmering R&B celebration, a Rhodes piano gurgling chord changes while a smooth sax floats around in the background. Simz and Bourelly take their turns with the beat, doling snappy airport brags and fly out invitations, their pin drops specific and globe-trotting. In Dubai, Simz promises, the “ganja” is “hella dank” and the air “hella’s dry”; it’s a hundred degrees in Bibi’s Babylon but at some point a “baggie in a Makr bag” gets her best friend deported. They both have flows and road warrior stories for days. “One way ticket to where it’s at,” Simz raps at one point, a promise that anything that matters is coming with her or waiting beyond the runway.
