For fans of The-Dream that worried the world’s finest chronicler of bedroom conquests since R. Kelly had turned to a life of icy Drake-ian laments, fear not: the Love King is back in full-force. “ROC”, the alleged first single off of his fourth LP, The Love IV (Diary of a Mad Man), finds the intrepid singer returning to the glossy, golden sound of “Rockin’ That Shit” and the generous, thrill-packed songwriting of his first two albums. Most surprisingly, given the nature of 1977 and much of Love King, there’s a tangible sexiness in the glistening keys and pulsating bass of “ROC (Roc Your Body)” that recalls arguably his greatest work: Electrik Red’s How to Be a Lady, Volume 1. When the bridge (which is so good it could be spun into its own song) transitions into a final chorus of The-Dream singing over his own vocals and a searing guitar solo, that seems like the smallest care in the world.
