Given their backgrounds in activism and clear-eyed paranoia, Killer Mike and El-P are prone to make political music. But since its 2013 inception, Run the Jewels has been their outlet favoring excellent shit-talking. Of course, concern for the world crops up on their releases, whether it’s Run the Jewels’ “DDFH” or RTJ2’s “Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)” and its powerful video. On the less explicitly political tracks—say, “Blockbuster Night, Pt. 1” or “36” Chain”—there’s a different sort of power: the ability to demolish a track in the face of grave danger.

“Talk to Me” is the first song from the anxiously-awaited Run the Jewels 3, and it falls closer to snarling vitriol than social critique. But Mike does target Trump: “Went to war with the devil and Shaitan/He wore a bad toupee and a spray tan,” he raps, and shouts at “these All Lives Matter-ass white folk.” El nods to a parent government full of “crooks [that] tap your phone and now have a file on you.” The fact that those lines can exist in the same song as “You think Baby Jesus killed Hitler just so I’d whisper?” is, as always, remarkable. The juxtaposition shows the polar inanities of our world: There’s nonsense and there’s no sense, but they’re both equally absurd.
