L.A.’s Pharaohs have had a busy 2013: they released an EP on ESP Institute and a full-length album on Not Not Fun, and they're capping it off with another 12” this month on Intercoastal Artists. Much like their previous work, lead cut “Manhunter” is a humid affair, using bird calls and tropical sounds to set the mood of the piece. Clocking in around 116 BPM, it brings to mind the jungle-inflected sounds of late '80s, as well as early '90s tribal house house tracks (think “Voodoo Ray”, “Ma Foom Bey”, “Day-Glo”), but with the addition of some dubbed-out bongos and fellow Angeleno Jenny Nono adding these rhythmic yet wordless mating calls, it offers up some new wrinkles.
