The Montreal producer Devon Hansen has covered a lot of ground in the world of outsider electronica, serving up sublimely abstract house and techno as d.hansen, Lotide, and Stefan Jós. But with his new moniker, Persuasion, he brings us to the club, employing heavier beats, dance-friendly structures, and hypnotic rhythms designed to get bodies moving.

It’s not a total departure. The title track from his dubby new EP, Quatermass—his first as Persuasion—is as thrilling and volatile as his ambient works; there are gusts of synths, tickling textures, relaxed drums, and syncopated sirens that echo urgently. But when funneled into a more concrete form—the inhale and exhale of a pulsing club beat—Hansen channels a completely different mood. Rather than turn the listener inward with frenetic energy, “Quatermass” finds a meditative groove that invites you to relax, come inside, and dance it off.
