It was somewhat jarring when Helado Negro's Roberto Lange starting moving away from folk and towards blippy electronic touches on last year’s Canta Lechuza, but if "Dance Ghost" is any indication, it seems that Lange has figured out the dials. The song is wonderfully enticing, making nice use of shaken synths to set a recognizable mood. There’s an echo of John Maus' more accessible work here, but Lange’s frazzled, somewhat delicate voice makes him an ideal fit for midtempo burners like these. He sounds committed and exhausted at the same time. "Dance Ghost" is a closing-time salvo, but that’s doesn’t mean the mood it conveys is particularly clear. Think of it as a slow, late-night sway-- the familiar feeling where you’re not quite sure whether the night deserves to be toasted, lamented, or forgotten.
