Fresh-faced producer Ian Evans' first single from his upcoming 12" debut as Napolian, Rejoice, meshes well with his synth-funk-obsessed Software label heads Ford & Lopatin. The 19-year-old Los Angeles kid draws from hardware-based gangsta-funk rather than the '80s throwback gunk of his soft-synthed retro-futurist peers, but it's Napolian's offbeat sense of composition that separates him from the pack of young producers. The combination of meticulous production, smart percussion, and soaring, seemingly improvised synth solos make "My Refuge" feel like a breathing, everblooming groove with a mind all its own. Rejoice is out January 31 on Software and Mexican Summer.
