Since the New York synth pop duo of Alex Frankel and Nicholas Millhiser debuted as Holy Ghost! with their 2007 Italo single “Hold On”, it seemed like it wouldn’t be long before some mash-up wag decided to pit the song against Drizzy’s resplendent “Hold On, We’re Going Home”. Yet HG! beat everyone to the punch by covering the track themselves, joining the likes of Dev Hynes and Arctic Monkeys in tackling the instant classic. Frankel takes Drake’s vocals at a slightly lower register, but the duo considerably up the disco backdrop of the original (which drew from “Sexual Healing”), making the kick and handclaps sound like something from the heyday of another fine Canadian export, producer Gino Soccio.
