Hearing a skilled rapper dissect a Madlib beat is somewhat like watching one of those kids who can solve a Rubik’s Cube in an impossibly short amount of time. Freddie Gibbs was at his technical best on this year's ESGN, but on “City”, that skill is put to the test by the multiple drum-lines of Madlib’s schizoid beat. After the beatmaker and session drummer Karriem Riggins lets loose with a surprisingly competent verse, Gibbs’ voice tumbles over the drums acrobatically, as Madlib pushes him to a limit that few rappers would likely be able to match.
