Listen to the East New York rapper’s latest song
Jimi Tents, the East New York upstart, returns on “Should've Called, Pt. 2,” a perfect prototype of his slinky, down-trodden hip-hop. The track is a sequel to a song on Tents’ 2015 debut, and here, the young rapper turns ever inward, compiling and dissecting his insecurities. The beat rattles everywhere, but Tents has a pacifying effect. He’s depressed and anxious and bitter about it all, but he also seems like the type to drop his head down to rise above, grinding his teeth through the worst of it. “Stuck to the floor/I’m grieving,” he raps both affectively and endearingly. Then he switches up his flow and jolts himself upward at once: “I glide above it, I’m so stubborn.” It’s a morose, relatable pick-me-up, and Tents’ perseverance is infectious.
