After extensive international touring as part of a jazz quintet, Oakland-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Russ Liquid discovered electronic music and signed to 1320. His saxophone-inflected template will probably sound familiar to fans of label mates Big Gigantic. "New Beginnings" is the subtle first single off his new album, Foreign Frequency (out March 5); Liquid's signature trumpet blasts right before the track's conclusion, but for the most part he lets the song coast on a background groove, relying on a landscape of fizzing synthesizers and a ghostly piano outro for maximum effect.
