Some of the biggest names in hip-hop have recorded under the Cash Money banner but Jacquees, one of the label’s newest signees, is steadily making a name for himself as an R&B crooner. The hardworking Atlanta native continued his steady streak of mixtape releases with Fuck a Friend Zone, teaming up with Detroit rapper Dej Loaf for 13 sultry slow jams. Amidst the sweet nothings and the dirty talk, “At the Club” is one of the tape’s few uptempo offerings. Compared to the songs that precede and follow it, producer W$Kharri increases the pace only slightly on “At the Club,” layering harp-like chords and squelching synths over a simple drum pattern. The uncomplicated beat leaves Jacquees and Dej free to focus on building a narrative for the tape—its titular opening track sounds like an autobiographical account of how they came to work together. “At the Club” is quite literally about spotting someone special after hours, but as the two trade verses about instant attraction, it’s easy buy into their story of a budding romance—fictional or otherwise.
