The internet-fueled combustion of genres has produced quite a bit music that's ham-fisted and derivative, but it's also enabled artists to harness old touches to crack open new spaces. Like so many of her UK contemporaries-- Jessie Ware, Katy B, James Blake, AlunaGeorge's Aluna Francis-- the 21-year-old vocalist Lulu James is finding ways to break down barriers between dance, soul and R&B, retro and futurist, pop and avant-garde. Following her Be Safe/Stuck EP, she's shared a new single "Closer", an icy-smooth track that considers the dance floor of clubs in the 1990s and yearning of old soul music in equal measure. It reimagines the past in a way that could only happen today.
