Brighton jangle-pop outfit Fear of Men are quick to fool listeners with their slick sunshine exterior. On the trio’s latest single “Descent”, from their upcoming debut full-length Loom, the band gloss up their already pristine sound with a seductively charming melody and glimmering riff, but its lyrics reveal the track’s true imperfections crackling underneath. Vocalist Jessica Weiss explores the complicated co-dependency of love as she refers to the intense connection as both a “dream” and “sickness” while repeatedly concluding in the pre-chorus, “’Cause I am you.” The austerity is softened to a sigh, though, and in that moment, the track whisks away into a pensive string finale that converts the immediately gratifying saccharinity into a melancholic aftertaste.
