Psych-damaged and eerily sweet, "Big Sleep for Alice" is a blackened pop ripper from LODRO, a very new Brooklyn band comprising three members of Royal Baths-- Jeremy Cox, Jigmae Baer, and Lesley Hann, who is also the ex-bassist of Friends. Working in a similarly bleak mode of noise-pop, the new song strips away a bit of Royal Bath's droning grit to focus on a refined melody and dead cool, slow-hallucinating sound they're calling "neo-noir punk." (They've shared two additional morphine-hazed tracks, sung by Hann, and the aesthetic reminds me a bit of another criminally slept-on New York band, Pigeons.) "Big Sleep"s repeat allusions to the end of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" befit their surreal approach. "Wake up, wake up, dear Alice," Cox delivers over a Velvet instrumental tapestry, recalling Alice's awakening from her curious, rabbit hole dream. LODRO, luckily, sound intent on staying down there.
