Vancouver collective Mood Hut, who make warm, slightly dazed tracks that suggest a post-nap state of mind, have recently gotten a bit more shine outside of their hometown. Their first single for Washington D.C.’s Peoples Potential Unlimited imprint brings to mind yet another D.C. denizen, Maxmillion Dunbar, so Mood Hut affiliates Pender Street Steppers drift between house, techno and New Age vibes without fully setting their foot down in any one spot. “Openin' Up” is both woozy and hazy, with dubby ripples of a hand drum appearing here and there. But midway through, what seemed like pebbles in a pond becomes a rockslide, before mellowing out once again.
