Quite a few of Animal Collective songs-- particularly from their Sung Tongs era-- feel and sound like fairground rides. "Today's Supernatural", then, is like one of their most intense trips yet. Each sound flashes brightly, as maxed-out textures carry a hyperactive momentum beneath Avey Tare's freak-out vocals. It's nice to hear him in this mode again, ripping, splintering and roughhousing his way through the song before ending on a guttural roar. Merriweather Post Pavillion was the summit to a decade-long ascent for Animal Collective; a graceful and impressive feat. It was difficult to pin down exactly where they could go afterwards, and while "Today's Supernatural" doesn't exactly answer that question, it carries the sound of a band ready to go to war for the answer.
