London dance-pop band CYMBALS used to be a little scrappy around the edges (and it was that fizzy promise that originally caught my ear), but they've got sharper over time and it suits them. The gnarliness of singer Jack Cleverly's voice and the wryness of his lyrical observations are still present and correct, as so are their disco yearnings. New single "The Natural World" (out on January 24 via Tough Love) is a witty, sweat-salty pop song about the peculiarities of media-drenched modern life. The song's made for pogo-ing around a dancefloor, reminiscent of when clubs used to close the night by playing something by the Cure, the Clash, or another ‘the' band at the end and everyone would have one last leap about, yelling the chorus at the top of their lungs. Altogether now: "We can hear the passing of time/ And the sound of us in your mind".
