"Borderline" is the comedown from "Holding On", the first single off Los Angeles duo Classixx's forthcoming debut, Hanging Gardens (out May 14 via Innovative Leisure). Where the latter refracted synthesizers through a bend-and-snap beat, this one is more forgiving, fading in and out of focus with its accompanying video's oversaturated colors and long shots. Kisses' Jesse Kivel lends a Yazoo-like wistfulness that steers the song away from yacht-rock's hedonistic bombast toward the earnest waters of real feelings. As its title suggests, "Borderline" lingers like a scent between a dance floor and your front door, sleeping and waking, in the liminal space between eyelids unavoidably opening toward dawn.
