John Jones grinds out tight grooves as the bassist for Dope Body, but it turns out he likes to stretch out, too. His solo project Nerftoss deals in a jammier, more open-ended brand of rock, though its scope is more diverse than that description might imply. His forthcoming LP Maiden Powers shifts deftly from fully-fleshed pop to weird bedroom experiments to sky-seeking loops, all with a sense of drive and wonder that gives the album unifying character.-=-=-=-

"Bottomless" falls pretty firmly under the sky-seeking loop category. If Dope Body sometimes recalls the grunting pound of the Jesus Lizard, this track veers closer to the kraut-punk meditations of Boredoms circa Super æ. A hyper drumbeat is the song’s backbone, but Jones’ stair-climbing bass is the fuel, propelling forward into a sunbeam of rising guitars. It would be easy for the "Bottomless" to be lazy mush, the musical equivalent of laying in the grass and staring at the clouds, but Jones grounds the tune in punk energy, making it more like a focused meditation than a drifting nap.
