For their latest hulking missive, Richmond-based doom crew Windhand have brought a paring knife—or rather, a tight, six-and-a-half-minute edit of Grief's Infernal Flower opener "Two Urns". Thirty-minute tracks like Soma's "Boleskine" are a testament to the band’s penchant for turbid grooves (and for casual doom fans, perhaps patience-testing ones). So it’s interesting to hear an abridged version of the standard Windhand epic. Don’t worry, though: the slow-creeping jams that acolytes expect surface just in time for the song's finale. With grunge maester Jack Endino (Nirvana, High on Fire, Soundgarden) manning the boards, Windhand have ventured out of the Appalachians and into the Palm desert. Asechiah Bogdan and Garrett Morris’ Kyussian riffs lend a hard-rock edge to frontwoman Dorthia Cottrell’s quivering, eerie alto, giving it a stage from which to soar.
