After releasing her 2016 debut album, Varmints, composer/producer Anna Meredith experimented with everything from writing elevator music to collaborating with Sigur Rós. Now she’s unveiled “Calion,” her contribution to Adult Swim’s Singles Series. Weaving between bright beams of organ and darting polyrhythms, “Calion” suggests a ride through an astral obstacle course, conveying a vivid sense of forward motion while following hairpin plot twists.

“Calion” is a song in three distinct phases; the first employing muted percussion and glowing synth arpeggios before morphing into a four-on-the-floor club cut. Meredith could have easily stopped, riding the dancefloor rhythm entirely. Rather, she builds the track with a stretched-out siren wail and accelerates the tempo, suggesting a massive beat drop is around the corner. But instead, she hooks a sharp left into darker terrain: The percussion thickens with urgency, and the siren tightens to an eerie shriek. Meredith’s versatile approach to music shows here, in condensed form, and is all the more compelling; in “Calion,” she crafts something mesmerizing.
