Dana Falconberry started out in folk, more or less—she's worked with Matt Bauer, whose somber solo banjo recordings evoked early Iron & Wine. But now she's working with Jim Eno, the drummer for Spoon, whose ear for rhythmic tension is so granular he could probably make percussion out of a spasming eyelid. "Palmless" is built on one such nervous drum track, but every sound floating above it is grand and impassive—Falconberry's cool, smoky voice, the single-finger synths, the droning guitars. Beneath everything, a bass line whirrs like a printer working away at a 500-page document. The mood is tense, insistent and inscrutable: It feels urgent, even as it seems to sit in place. If you've ever impatiently drummed the chair cushions in an airless waiting room, this is what your head sounded like.
