Appearing unannounced in the winter of 2017, Oso Oso’s The Yunahon Mixtape was a lovable collection of unpretentious indie rock songs. Frontman Jade Lilitri sang about the fleeting nature of love and friendship through a connected cast of characters in the fictional city of Yunahon; the album recalled Death Cab and Jimmy Eat World at their most summery. The Yunahon Mixtape’s clarity and confidence belies the fact its creator couldn’t find a label to release it. Even though Oso Oso have toured relentlessly and signed to Triple Crown in the time since, there’s still something alien about them: The artwork for their new single features Lilitri skateboarding in a shark mask and its title—“gb/ol h/nf”—resembles an Aphex Twin song.

It’s somehow both more immediate and inscrutable than anything on Yunahon, insistently churning as Lilitri asks, “It’s like if I serve no use/Where will I get my purpose from?” The math-rock dissonance of the bridge initially seems to throw everything off the rails before Lilitri unveils what the title means—“Goodbye old love/Hello new friends”—leaving it to the listener to decide whether it’s a period of mourning, celebration, or both. “This is where it ends and begins again,” Lilitri sings during the fade out, a fitting valediction for the first song of Oso Oso’s second wind.
