London-based dance explorer Ralph Cumbers has spent the last couple of years digging ever deeper into the different strains of UK club music. As he's done so his work has become noisier and less structured. The two tapes he released last year—Acid Tracts, under his preferred Bass Clef moniker, and Low Point X, as Some Truths—were jams about club music that avoided the form themselves. It's great, then, than "Self-Perpetuating Fun Loop", the lead track from his forthcoming EP for Pan, Raven Yr Own Worl, is aimed at the floor. Cumbers seems to have harnessed that modular system, wringing out of it a punchy, booming acid treatise that both adheres to genre convention—see that unmistakable, sternum-rattling 303 bassline—and ventures smartly off path, with Cumbers deconstructing the track halfway through only to rebuild it in time for a chaotic finale.
