As Trace Mountains, the Brooklyn musician Dave Benton makes tender, lo-fi rock songs with sharp lyricism and vivid natural imagery. “Turn Twice,” the soaring lead single off his debut album A Partner to Lean On, is Benton’s most vulnerable and probing work yet.

Versions of “Turn Twice” have existed in Benton’s catalog for many years: He debuted it in 2011 with his band Spook Houses as a shorter, angrier punk track. The latest recording is the most expansive yet; as in the original version, Benton begins by admitting that he is directionless, describing himself as “sorry, stupid, looking sore.” But his writing is more colorful and complex now, with bucolic new observations like “Golden light/Upon the rising water/Through the trees.” His instrumental, too, is more considered: A droning synth pairs with Benton’s distorted vocals to open up the folky, guitar-heavy arrangement. Though Benton never determines exactly where he’s going or what he’s going to do, it’s clear that he will find beauty there.
