Saba’s latest collaboration with Daoud is relentlessly encouraging

Saba wants everyone to do their best. His songs are relentlessly encouraging, propelled by high-spirited, self-help credos. The Chicago rapper’s new track, “Where Ideas Sing”—his second collaboration this year with the multi-instrumentalist Daoud this year—is all about finding inspiration and wrestling a future out of it.

At the start of the track, Saba looks back a bit, reminiscing about Chicago open mic nights, recording in his basement studio, and listening to Food & Liquor. But he mostly looks forward to a new generation of “young pioneers,” creatives building their world for themselves. His flow is lively and bursting with energy in the two-stepping groove. He flicks his tongue, generating his own rhythm with pace, and his verses surge into the hook, sung by a beaming chorus of warm voices. His words are clearly a testimonial: “I just bought a car, I was just riding the bus/Spoke out for the dream instead of biting my tongue/That’s how I let my ideas sing but now it’s your turn.” If his ideas can be realized, he suggests, so can yours. Enjoying Saba’s work makes one feel optimistic: Who could root against someone who’s rooting so hard for the rest of us?
