The Mast are a Brooklyn-based duo comprised of female vocalist and guitarist Haale Gafori and drummer Matt Kilmer (who, incidentally, also composes the music for "Louie"). On the band’s 2011 debut, Wild Poppies, Kilmer fortified Gafori’s incantations with mostly a djembe and floor tom, lending her a nymph-of-the-woods quality befitting the album title.

For live shows, however, Kilmer moves between a drum kit and his laptop, and “UpUpUp” sees the Mast leaning toward the more electronic end of their spectrum. In the song’s accompanying video, Kilmer’s stuttering clicks sound almost like bones cracking as a dancer pops and locks to his beats. Gafori steps in line as well, matching her syllabic wails to her partner’s strict rhythm. With an ominous synthesized growl curling like dry ice underneath, “UpUpUp” casts a beguiling spell.
