The fear of unforeseen consequences creeps through Nicole Atkins’ “Domino,” a sultry, fuzzed-out slow-burner that sounds like a cut from a dusty vinyl record. “I don’t wanna play safe and sound/When the world comes tumblin’, tumblin’ down,” the New Jersey native croons. Snatches of background vocals pierce the static like distant radio signals. With its music video homage to Saturday Night Fever and the Asbury Park boardwalk, “Domino” embraces the same retro glamour and New Jersey pride of past songs like “Brokedown Luck.”

Now living in Nashville, Atkins recorded her upcoming album, Italian Ice, with familiar collaborators, including members of the Bad Seeds and the Dap-Kings. Together they momentarily step back from the full-throated soul vocals that defined 2017’s Goodnight Rhonda Lee, and instead drop into a disco groove with shades of French touch and Jessie Ware. “Domino” aims for high drama—it nearly ends in a fake-out after the bridge—but the skulking bassline and those deceptively simple lyrics about watching the world fall apart remind us that we already know how the story ends.
