There's no shortage of artists drawing direct inspiration from the Knife's Silent Shout; earlier this year, Canadian duo Purity Ring pretty much turned the aesthetic into an album-length statement of purpose. But it's hard to complain when the sound remains so appealing. "Northern Lights", the first single from Swedish electro-pop outfit Kate Boy, is straightforward and catchy, with a chills-inducing chorus that begs for a shout-along. But what's most impressive about "Northern Lights" is the intricate production touches, as bouncy-ball gurgles and swells of spooky drones puncture the song's metallic synths. By the time it opens up and the synths run wild before one big fade-out, the chorus begins to sound like a mission statement for this intriguing new group: "Everything we touch turns to gold."
