Over fiery guitar and intrepid drums, she yelps perfectly melodramatic proclamations—“I’m alive and I’m on fire”—that would feel like clichés if they weren’t cleverly cushioned between specific details about her life: her hamster’s name; the cider she’s drinking. Samia’s lyricism shares the burning adolescent yearning and critique of idol worship of Lorde’s “Perfect Places,” and Samia almost seems to repurpose Lorde’s lyric “I’m 19 and I’m on fire” to describe her own 21-year-old struggles.
