Ex-Cult is the Memphis punk band f/k/a Sex Cult, who offer a fresh take on the darkened, deadpan corners of noisy 1970s proto-punk. Their debut 7" with the new name, produced by Ty Segall, is out October 16 via Goner in advance of a Segall-produced LP on November 13. Ex-Cult features members of True Panther-signed pop band Magic Kids, but the real force behind A-side "M.P.D." seems drawn from the band's snarly frontguy/zinester Chris Shaw, unsurprisingly a vet of Memphis hardcore punk act Vile Nation. The new single also comes backed by a cover of 1970s Australian punk band Chosen Few's "No Fun on the Beaches".
