Pat Grossi's Active Child project has frequently been known for ethereal, synth-streaked motifs, but "Subtle", a track from his new EP Rapor, is a sharp divergence from what he was up to previously, with "Playing House", his How to Dress Well collaboration from 2011's You Are All I See, as the closest thing in his catalog to something as relatively intense and physical that's on display here. The tune leans hard on aggressive 1980s synth-pop textures, with vocalist Mikky Ekko on hand to deliver some full-throated forcefulness contrasting with Grossi's always-floating falsetto. The Rapor EP is out October 22 via Vagrant.
