Ben Khan operates with woozy R&B affairs, heavy on the low end and decorated with squelching synths and bluesy guitar lines that are equal parts Prince and Cliff Martinez. In contrast, the London producer-songwriter’s latest track, “Youth”, from his recent 1992 EP, is a brighter, more expansive cut than his other work; what begins as a sparse, atmospheric track blasts into a cacophonous, funk-infused pop jam with an infectious bass line accentuated by soft synth stabs that gather around the beat, lingering like a warm mist. “Youth” takes Khan’s formula for sultry soul and adds a few more hooks, an earworm-y melody, and a glossy production finish. It’s Khan at his most accessible, and his most daring, too.
